I’m Chris VanDijk, and the struggles of District 32 are personal to me. I’ve lived them as a long-term renter, a 30-year union advocate, and a firefighter on the front lines. I paired a decade of emergency response with a Master’s in Public Policy to turn frontline experience into real results. I'm running for State House to deliver a progressive, community-centered vision.I’m not here to represent special interests. As the son of an immigrant, I was instilled with a sense of service, a way to give back for the opportunities we’ve been given. My grandfather served in WWII and Korea, and my grandparents were prisoners of war in Indonesia. After immigrating to the United States, my <a href="/e463b3ab-855b-4e8e-9a41-b7e0015971c5#block-4b98c51f-3f06-4581-acf8-032363d3b65f">father</a> and four of his six siblings served, a tradition I continued.

As a firefighter, I've seen firsthand what our communities need to not only survive but thrive in the face of growing challenges like wildfires and a changing climate. It's about proactive solutions, not just reactive responses.

A strong economy starts with strong workers. Having been in a union leadership position, I know the power of working and negotiating with management. We'll fight for legislation that protects workers' rights, strengthens our unions, and ensures everyone gets fair pay for fair work. <h2>It's about us!</h2>My commitment to public service is rooted in the belief that progress comes from collective effort and respect for the common good. There are countless ways to serve, and in 2014, I joined the South Adams County Fire Department. Changing careers was a leap of faith. I had spent many years in the arts before deciding to be a stay-at-home dad to our young son. When the opportunity to impact my community presented itself, I grabbed it with both hands. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made.As a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, I've seen how policy can impact our safety and change lives. While still serving as a firefighter, I returned to graduate school where I earned a Master's of Public Policy from the University of Colorado, Denver. My studies took me around the world, where I met and learned from elected leaders, firefighters, aid workers, and diplomats in countries shaped by ongoing conflict and war.I intend to take these lessons to the Colorado legislature, where I will serve as your voice and advocate for the residents of our district.

I understand this struggle. Data shows the average age of a first-time home buyer is 40. I was 43 when I was able to purchase our first home. Making Colorado more affordable is more than just housing; it’s about building vibrant, affordable communities. This means creating neighborhoods that are not only accessible but also offer a variety of housing options, affordable services, and pathways to improve lives.
